Bailey has spoken recently of his desire to undergo a polygraph test on camera to prove he didn't kill Sophie Toscan du Plantier. Despite being the self-confessed chief suspect for the unsolved murder of Ms Toscan du Plantier in West Cork in December 1996, Bailey has always maintained his innocence and has never been charged with the killing here in Ireland. Just last month the 64-year-old claimed he had informed movie director Jim Sheridan he was willing to be filmed taking a lie detector test "to prove to the whole world I am innocent", as part of the Dublin filmmaker's recently-released documentary on the murder mystery. But the test didn't proceed, as Sheridan opted not to take him up on his offer of using a polygraph probe for inclusion in the hit Sky documentary, 'Murder at the Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie'. When asked this week if he'd be willing to undergo a polygraph probe with Lie Detector Ltd, Manchester-born Bailey said: "It's really not my top priority at the moment. Cash-in-transit companies, pharmaceutical giants and even creche owners make up the bulk of Irish businesses which are increasingly turning to pre-employment polygraph testing to ensure candidates are honest and trustworthy. Since the recession firms of all sizes have started employing truth detection experts to ensure their new employee will not rip them off. Sian Devine, chief executive of Dublin-based Lie Detector Ltd, said her pre-employment services were more in demand because of a surge in internal corporate theft and fraud since the downturn. Ms Devine said she receives more than a dozen enquiries a week from corporate clients and they are carrying out between one and two tests a week. She said: "This wasn’t a service we offered during the boom, as there wasn’t really a demand for that. But now because of the high unemployment rates which means there are a lot of people looking for work, employers want to take their time and make absolutely certain that they have picked the right candidate. " According to Ms Devine, security companies operating in high-risk sectors form the biggest client base, as criminal gangs frequently try to target them. Polygraph tests can help in these situations - Published: 2019-09-10 - Modified: 2020-07-11 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/services/employee-theft-or-fraud/ Employee Theft or Fraud Controlling inventory or company funds can become difficult, at the least, when employees are suspected of theft or fraud. Polygraph tests can be administered in these situations to help eliminate doubt about trusted employees, and to expose the culprits. Over the years we have proven the veracity of many innocent employees, clearing their names and helping restore faith in these loyal employees. We have also helped recover goods and money for many employers in awkward or difficult situations where otherwise they would not have been recoverable. Polygraph testing will accurately assess the truthfulness of all employee’s statements. It can also help investigations quickly rule out the wrong suspects, significantly reducing both time and expense while allowing the removal of unfounded suspicions without invasive examinations, warrants and unrest that can occur when the wrong suspect is falsely singled out. Frequently, the fear of testing can quickly expose a guilty person, as they tend to refuse a polygraph. By testing a group of personnel it can prevent finger pointing until there is reliable information from all of the suspects. Ultimately, testing significantly reduces the stress placed on everyone involved, loyal or otherwise, when company assets are compromised by one ‘bad apple’. --- ### Lie Detectors Snare Party Cheats > Suspicious Girlfriends Clamp Down - Females account for most of the clientele who book polygraph probes for boyfriends or husbands. - Published: 2019-08-13 - Modified: 2020-04-24 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/media/irish-daily-star/lie-detectors-snare-party-cheats/ Lie Detectors Snare Party Cheats By Nick Bramhill Suspicious girlfriends clamp downGirls who suspect their fellas have been cheating at the office Christmas party are demanding they take lie detector tests. Big security companies, pharmaceutical firms and multi-nationals are now asking potential employees to undergo a truth-telling test from a registered company. As there are more incidents of corporate theft, Tiger kidnappings and illegal drug production, new employers want to be sure that they have the right candidate. Sian Devine, CEO of Dublin-based Lie Detector Ltd, said that there is a growing demand for their services. "Companies want to know that their future employees have integrity and honesty," she said. As the leading expert on the polygraph in Ireland, we have been quoted many times, by many publications, also. Frequently, in an attempt to sensationalize a case for TV, the media has attempted to use a polygraph test for entertainment purposes, but using a polygraph properly can offer techniques to help the media ensure their sources are truthful and trustworthy. Why not verify your sources first? With upwards of a 95% confidence rate, the equipment and techniques of today are advanced and reliable. Today, with social media, false accusations are quite common. News sources can become confused with things uncorroborated, 'from the web', and anonymous or dubious sources hiding behind fake profiles. Stories do literally become viral, making separating fact from fiction near impossible in many cases, infecting the truth. Fake news is one result, and innuendo or unnamed sources are becoming more common today, due to the unreliability of many modern sources - as are the potential financial liabilities for such behavior. In a 24 hour news cyclea reputation or one's financial well-being can be destroyed in an instant. A lie detector gives one a way to fight back. Insurance sector experts in Ireland estimate that insurance fraud costs the industry around €90m per year. Far from this being a victimless crime, the result is that every single policy holder pays for this by way of increased premiums. Staged accidents top the list of insurance scams often involving criminal gangs. However other frauds include fake personal injury claims, staged burglaries and genuine claims where losses are inflated to receive higher payouts. When used as part of the investigative process, polygraphs can also help to either exonerate or implicate suspects or witnesses. Such investigations can significantly reduce costs for both investigators and companies, by helping to reduce the number of false and fraudulent claims. In helping to prevent fraudulent claims being paid by Insurers we are helping an industry rife with fraud. Many public and private entities, sports associations and NGO’s can have the same issues. Doing business will, many times, expose people to situations where a kickback is offered. There may be an accusation of wrongdoing or evidence that shows no specific suspect. Polygraph tests can be administered in these situations for truth verification. Polygraph examinations are extensively used by police, lawyers and others in their efforts to determine the truthfulness of people's statements. They can allow investigators to quickly rule suspects in or out of an investigation. Ultimately, testing significantly reduces investigative time and costs and can save many times the a mount of money they cost. Faith in the reliability of polygraphs has been enhanced by multiple studies and evidence. While commonly called a ‘lie detector’, a closer common term might be ‘truth detector’. There is no absolute test for lying or not, but a polygraph is very accurate in determining if someone is likely telling the truth, by comparing involuntary reactions to known human responses from the way one acts when telling the truth. Being accused or suspected of something you did not do, by a loved one, or suspecting a family member, can wreck havoc on one's home life, in addition to the possible legal issue that are related. Cheating, child abuse and addictions are just a few areas where polygraphs are often administered, relating to domestic situations. Cheating When a spouse or partner is suspected of cheating it can be devastating. Resolving the issues, when you are telling the truth, is usually more that swearing your innocence. The increased emotional states for all involved do not lend themselves to easy reconciliation without some way to both calm the situation and resolve the questions. Getting something like this behind you, or, proving they did happen, is life changing, in either case. The ability to rebuild a relationship, going forward, on the basis of trust is hard to do without resolution or closure. A polygraph is sometimes the only way this can ever happen. There really is little other way to move forwards, when there is no physical proof to exonerate you. Domestic or Child Abuse Child abuse and endangerment issues are also situations where a polygraph can be used to refute horrible accusations or prevent incarceration. Polygraphs are also conducted when there is an allegation of physical or sexual abuse (current or historical). Settling such situations is of the utmost importance, both for a worried parent or an unjustly accused person.... --- ### False or Malicious Allegations > This type of assault can and does destroy many lives. Unfounded and or malicious allegations can have a severe detrimental effect on the life of the person involved and also on those around them, and their friends and loved ones. Settling matters and getting to the truth is of paramount importance. Public Exposure Today, with the proliferation of social media, false accusations are quite common. Malicious attempts at slandering someone, or just to promote the offender's own cause can destroy your public image and perception of honesty. Depending on where they originate or who is doing the repeating, the damage can be devastating. Fake Social Attacks Spreading of innuendos and flat out lies can be vicious and can go viral, often by anonymous sources hiding behind fake profiles. In such cases it is almost impossible for one to clear their name without some form of proof or evidence. Many people, even when they are in possession of corroborating evidence, or even a court order against someone, or exonerating them of something, still will want to take a polygraph to put to rest any lingering questions or doubt. Fundamental in situations where it is one person's word against another, with no physical evidence. Custody Cases Child Support Divorce Infidelity Abuse Are Polygraphs Accepted in Courts? While there may be a great deal of misinformation around the subject, in Irish courts polygraph test results can be be admitted as evidence, as it is usually up to the judge to decide on it's relevance. We can affirm that polygraph evidence is currently being used in family law courts as well as criminal and civil courts in Ireland. One should never discount the effect a polygraph might have on negotiations or out of court settlements either. While certainly not a sole deciding factor in a court case, a polygraph test can be quite compelling evidence. Since a polygraph test is only as good as the examiner, it is very important to use someone that will be respected by the people involved on both sides. The Polygraph which is often referred to as a “Lie Detector” is an instrument that records physiological reactions caused by the autonomic nervous system. A polygraph examination is a combination of both a psychophysiological testing technique and an interview. The instrument itself is a combination of several recording devices routinely used in the medical and scientific community and it records the physiological changes responses which occur when the subject is asked questions during the test. The polygraph records respiration, cardiovascular activity and electro dermal activity. How Accurate is a Polygraph test? Undoubtedly polygraph testing is very accurate when the examiner is properly qualified and is using the latest computerised equipment. There are a number of different polygraph techniques or tests and the examiner should always use the one which is most accurate and best suited to the issue under investigation. There is no one single figure to sum up the accuracy of polygraph tests as there are a numbers of factors which affect accuracy. Please see our article How accurate can I expect a Polygraph test to be? for more information on this topic. How reliable is Polygraph Testing? There is no doubt that the polygraph is highly reliable, providing the person using it is properly trained and the technique they use is validated. The American Polygraph Association (APA) has gathered over 200 studies on the subject. Based on twelve separate studies involving 2174 actual cases since 1980, evidence suggests that qualified polygraph examiners are 98%... --- ### Polygraph Testing Services > We are the leading supplier of polygraph and Lie detection services in Ireland. Lie Detector testing has proven to be a powerful and reliable scientific tool for many decades now. It is an effective means for either verifying truthfulness or detecting deceit in a wide variety of situations, whether this is a private matter, employment issue or for legal purposes, testing is often used to either confirm or exonerate a person’s involvement in any suspect activity or wrongdoing and is of great assistance in the absence of other corroborative evidence (i. e. one person’s word against another). When you are wrongly accused a polygraph examination can help you clear your name. The polygraph is widely used throughout the world particularly in the United States, Canada, Australia, and many European countries. National security agencies and the majority of U. S police departments use the these tests for law enforcement pre-employment or pre-clearance screening. Security sensitive professions screen existing employees who hold sensitive positions to ensure security. The polygraph is also used in investigations of specific events, such as criminal cases. The use of these highly accurate tests are being used with increasing frequency in the U. K and have been introduced in the supervision and management of post conviction sex offenders. Hopefully this will lead the way to the introduction of sex offender testing in Ireland in the not too distant future. Evidence collected through these tests by a qualified examiner can be used in courts in the ROI, it is also an extremely valuable aid during pre-trial investigation and preparation, substantially reducing investigative... --- ### News > See the latest info and news about our lie detection services we perform throughout Ireland. There are times when telling lies may be acceptable such as buffing during a game of poker but being a liar generally isn’t seen as an admirable trait. Tell a Lie Day offers people a chance at pretending for a little while. It is reported that the average person tells 1. 65 lies a day, other reports suggest people tell significantly more than this. However 90% of these are reported to be “white lies! . A white lie is often described as a lie about a small or important matter that is told to avoid hurting someone. At Lie Detector Ireland we deal on a day-to-day basis with the outcome of deception  - which in many situations can be devastating and extremely harmful. Lies can destroy trust - often a proven liar will never be believed even when speaking the truth. Polygraph testing is an effective way to establish is someone is being deceptive and equally allow a truthful person to clear their name. However the idea of Tell a Lie day is not to hurt others but to have a little fun with deception, telling some harmless lie and see how people react. You may want to use this day as an opportunity to be creative and make up an outlandish or funny lie. It can also serve as a reminder of the importance... --- ### Polygraph Examiner Sian Devine speaks to Newstalk's Henry McKean - Published: 2024-09-25 - Modified: 2024-10-05 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/polygraph-examiner-sian-devine-speaks-to-newstalks-henry-mckean/ - Categories: News Henry McKean from Newstalk joined Sian to find out a little about how polygraph testing works. The inquest into Steve Dymonds death is currently being heard. Steve Dymond appeared on the Jeremy Kyle show in 2019, failed a lie detector test and died (by apparently taking his own life) one week later. It is speculated that the results of the test may have been a factor in his death. The currently ongoing inquest continues into the death of Steve Dymond, who was a guest on the Jeremy Kyle show. Steve undertook a lie detector test to convince his fiancée that he had not cheated on her, however he failed the test and he died (suspected suicide) shortly after appearing on the tv show. The coroners court heard that Steve Dymond was “actively suicidal” just six weeks before going on to the tv show. It also heard that Steve was desperate to appear on the show and take the test, claiming it was a matter of “life and death”. He was initially turned down for the show but was then accepted as a guest after obtaining a letter from his doctor. We deal with many people desperate to clear their name of wrongdoing. There is usually a consequence when someone is not able to clear their name and when the person is being accused of cheating, that consequence could mean the end of the relationship. People considering taking a polygraph test can be in an extremely stressful and despairing situation and this may be affecting their mental health. That desperation can sometimes lead to a person fixating that passing a polygraph test will resolve their issues and be the answer to all of their problems. They may feel it is the only thing they can do and they want to do it ASAP. This may mean that sometimes people are not entirely honest or even are not able to be... --- ### Why do people use Lie Detectors? - Published: 2024-09-06 - Modified: 2024-09-06 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/why-do-people-use-lie-detectors/ - Categories: News There are many reasons why someone may take a lie detector / polygraph test. However they almost always relate to situations where a person is claiming they are being falsely accused. Taking a polygraph test allows an innocent person to clear their name. Why do people take polygraph / lie detector examinations? Well, typically the reason why a polygraph test is taken is because the person needs to prove they are being truthful usually in relation to a (false) accusation which has been made. When someone is under suspicion of wrongdoing there may be no other way they can prove they are being truthful, so they take a lie detector test. A fairly common reason for taking a test is because someone has been accused, or is under suspicion of cheating in their relationship with their partner, often known as infidelity testing. There is a strong association  between polygraph tests and infidelity as many daytime television shows would test people for this very reason, often for entertainment purposes. However, the reality is that there is a wide range of reasons why tests are conducted. Another typical reason is an accusation of theft, either in the home or at a workplace. Testing works particularly well when there is either only one, or a small number of people who could have committed the theft. Thereby not only identifying the guilty party but allowing the innocent parties to clear their names. Other reasons polygraph test are taken include: Domestic disputes Accusations of physical assault  Accusations of sexual abuse or sexual assault Family law issues Pre-employment screening to verify trustworthiness of potential employees Workplace or employee testing  Business disputes Sporting tournaments Fraud and/or bribery Addiction issues Investigations Media reasons Polygraph testing can be conducted whereby serious crimes... --- ### Polygraph Examiner Sian Devine speaks to Irish Independent > Ireland's Leading Polygraph Examiner Sian Devine speaks to Kirsty Blake Knox from The Irish Independent about Polygraph testing in Ireland. - Published: 2024-03-25 - Modified: 2024-03-25 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/uncategorized/polygraph-examiner-sian-devine-speaks-to-irish-independent/ - Categories: Uncategorized                                                                                                                    Sian Devine, the leading Polygraph Examiner in Ireland speaks to Kirsty Blake Knox from The Irish Independent about Polygraph testing. Click here to read the article in full on The Irish Independent website.   Kirsty explains how it's a strange feeling getting hooked up to a lie detector test. There is a lot of paraphernalia. Two coiled wires are wrapped around your chest and your stomach to monitor your breathing rate and pattern, and a pressure cuff attached to your arm to take a constant reading of your heart rate. Two clips are fixed to your index and ring finger to monitor electrodermal activity, while a plethysmograph monitor looks at blood rate volume. Finally, you sit down on a sensor mat to track exactly how much you squirm and shift. Examiners ask you a series of questions and, depending on the physiological changes recorded on the machinery, they assess whether you have passed or failed. A smear campaign conducted by  a narcissist is a manipulation tactic and will be particularly vindictive and persistent.  Choosingtherapy. com describe the elements of such a campaign as being vengeful and very deliberate. What's more the narcissist knows exactly what they are doing. Furthermore, they are insistent and persistent in their quest to damage their victim’s reputation. Unbelievably we have even come across a situation when the narcissist liar continued to tell lies at the church door at the funeral of one of their victims. Nothing is off limits it appears. Narcissists will project their bad qualities They will accuse their victims of the very things they are doing themselves. Moreover, their campaign will be calculated; they know who they can and can’t manipulate. Additionally, the narcissist will have a good idea of who will believe their lies. They will then target these selected individuals who are then likely to repeat these lies. Why do Narcissists do this? There are a number of reasons why a narcissist may engage in a smear campaign. However they often revolve around a need for revenge with the goal of discrediting their victim. Also it may involve financial gain. Equally, it may be connected to the narcissists low self-esteem. Narcissists often have control issues. They like to appear to be the victim, as though they are the wronged party. One of these is the suitability of the person to take a polygraph examination. If someone is not honest about their physical or mental health this can adversely affect the test in some circumstances. During the polygraph examination the examiner is simply collecting physiological data from the person taking the test. Therefore, anything which affects us physiologically has the potential to affect the test. Consequently, it is important that the examinee does not have any health condition which are unstable. This is regardless of whether they are taking prescribed medication or not: otherwise they could be wasting their money!                                                                                                                                                 Examinee’s can take an almost simplistic approach: They  believe... --- ### What constitutes a "good" polygraph test question? > One of the most important elements of a lie detector test is ensuring only "good" questions are asked. "Bad" questions could adversely affect test results. - Published: 2023-07-31 - Modified: 2023-07-31 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/uncategorized/what-constitutes-a-good-polygraph-test-question/ - Categories: Uncategorized ‘Relevant’ test questions refer to the questions which are asked in relation to the reason the test is  being conducted. There are a number of rules and good practice regarding the compilation of relevant test questions. Polygraph test relevant questions should only be asked about factual things. They should be black and white, with no grey areas. Therefore, questions should not be asked about feelings, emotions, intentions or opinions. The question should be worded in such a way it can only be answered with a yes or no. They are generally as short as possible with no unnecessary details. The question will have a narrow focus and ask about one single thing and so do not generally include words such as - or, and. The questions should be simple, direct, used with the examinee’s terminology, they should be easy to understand with no double meaning. The examinee should be in no doubt as to what they are being asked. Also, it is important that the questions do not assume guilt. For example, if the examinee is denying ever cheating on their partner, they should not be asked if they cheated “more than once” or “more than twice”. Clearly the question needs to address the issue under investigation. Additionally legal jargon should be avoided and if possible, reaction-evoking words. A good examiner will ensure all relevant test questions are ‘good’ questions and will not ask an unsuitable question just because someone insists, they really need to be asked a particular question.... --- ### Testing someone when their English language skills are not good. > Conducting a polygraph test when someone does not speak the same language as the examiner can be problematic and potentially lead to less accurate results. - Published: 2023-07-18 - Modified: 2023-07-18 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/uncategorized/testing-someone-when-their-english-language-skills-are-not-good/ - Categories: Uncategorized Conducting a polygraph test with a candidate who does not speak or understand good English is challenging for many reasons. A considerable amount of information is relayed to the examinee in the pre-test part of the examination process and it is vital that the examinee fully understands exactly what they are being told. This process entails physiologically preparing the examinee for the test and is a critical part of the process. If the examinee does not fully understand everything this could be a contaminating factor which can adversely affects the results. Cultural issues may come into play, words may have a different meaning in other languages so may not translate with the exact same meaning. A rather basic illustration of this point is the difference between “British English” and “American English”. For example, telling someone in Ireland they have a  “a fine ass” when you are impressed with their donkey, conveys an entirely different meaning to someone from America who would think you were admiring their buttocks. Languages develop in a way to express culture. Learning another language may help a person understand what is being said but without understanding culture, subtle nuances will be missed and words may be misused.   Using an interpreter who may understand these cultural and language differences may not be the obvious solution it may initially appear to be. An examiner must always be able to stand by any result they give and their testing should stand up to professional scrutiny. The examiner cannot... --- ### What Questions can I be asked? > Questions about multiple issues in one polygraph test result in a less reliable outcome. Single-issue tests are the most accurate type of lie detector test. - Published: 2023-06-30 - Modified: 2023-06-30 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/uncategorized/what-questions-can-i-be-asked/ - Categories: Uncategorized The accuracy of a test will drop significantly if the questions are regarding multiple issues.   For the vast majority of our clients a single-issue polygraph test is the most appropriate. This is because the reason most of our clients undertake the examination is because they have been falsely accused of something and they want to clear their name. A single-issue test is conducted in relation to one specific issue with up to three questions asked in relation to that one distinct issue. This is the most accurate type of test. See the American Polygraph Association website for more information on the validity and accuracy of lie detector testing. More is not always better Sometimes an examinee may be more focused on how many questions they can be asked and trying to ensure these questions cover as much as possible about multiple issues. They may feel this represents better value for money. This is not a good strategy. Asking questions about more than one issue (from a polygraph perspective) in the same examination will significantly affect the accuracy of the test. Research has shown that multi-issue tests and screening tests are considerably less accurate than single-issue tests. Additionally, the narrower the scope of the questions will produce the best accuracy. We always explain to our clients that the best way to understand the scope of a test is to consider it to be actually just one question, as the second and the third questions should be in relation to the... --- ### Do Drugs Affect the Results of a Polygraph Test? > Do drugs affect the results of a polygraph test? Being on prescribed medication is not usually an issue for the polygraph. - Published: 2023-05-03 - Modified: 2023-05-03 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/do-drugs-affect-the-results-of-a-polygraph-test/ - Categories: News When a person is prescribed medication by their doctor, it is usually because they have a health or medical condition. Medication to deal with that health issue, administered at the correct dosage should stabilise the condition. In most cases this means the health condition is not an issue for a polygraph examination and will not adversely affect the results. However, if the dosage of a medication has been recently increased this suggests that the original dosage was no longer effective. Therefore enough time should be allowed for the new dosage to become effective before undergoing a test.   It is important to be honest with the examiner about any health conditions otherwise this could adversely affect the results of the test. Prior to accepting an appointment, the examiner will ask a number of questions in order to assess the person’s suitability to take a polygraph test. Any condition which affects a person physiologically is likely to impact the test. Consequently, not being honest with the examiner or deliberately with-holding information about their physical or mental health may result in the examinee wasting their money. There are a number of myths around the polygraph and drugs.      We have come across situations where people believe they should stop taking medication in order to take a polygraph test. Not only is this a dangerous myth but this is likely to make the person unsuitable to take a test. All medication should be taken as normal and under no circumstances should a... --- ### How Accurate Can I Expect a Polygraph Test To Be? > A number of factors affect the accuracy of a Lie Detector test, so how accurate is it? Generally, very accurate with a highly qualified Examiner... - Published: 2023-04-12 - Modified: 2023-04-12 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/can-i-expect-a-polygraph-test-to-be-accurate/ - Categories: News There are a number of factors which affect the accuracy of a Lie Detector test, so how accurate is it? Some of these things can be controlled by the examiner, some of these cannot. The things that an examiner can control include being properly qualified, which involves training with a Polygraph school accredited by The American Polygraph Association (APA) and ensuring that they keep up to date with the latest research and any new developments. (Please note the APA does not accredit polygraph businesses, it is the individual examiner themselves who can be a member if they meet the APA’s criteria). The examiner also needs to be using the latest computerised polygraph equipment. The examiner must also conduct the examination in an appropriate environment suited for testing. There are a number of things not within the control of the examiner and some that are within the control of the examinee. First of all, the person taking the test should only be asked questions to which they are certain they are being truthful. A polygraph, despite commonly being known as a “lie detector” is actually verifying truthfulness. Essentially this means that any questions where doubts or uncertainty exist, or questions the examinee is unsure about or does not remember, means they are not being truthful – and you cannot be telling the truth if you do not remember! In our experience if the person taking a test is being asked questions about a time when they were very drunk or under... --- ### Polygraph Testing for Memory Loss or Forgotten Situations. > Occasionally, individuals may want to take a test because they cannot remember something. Find out how a Lie Detector Test deals with memory loss or gaps. - Published: 2023-03-24 - Modified: 2023-03-24 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/polygraph-testing-for-memory-loss-or-forgotten-situations/ - Categories: News Occasionally, we are contacted by individuals who want to take a test because they cannot remember something, perhaps due to time lapse or memory impairment, and they hope taking a test will provide some clarity. Unfortunately for these individuals the polygraph cannot help. The polygraph is not scouring the dark depths of a person’s mind to retrieve memories they cannot actively recall. The polygraph is simply collecting physiological data from the examinee via components attached to them. Analysis of this data allows the Polygraph examiner to make a judgement regarding the truthfulness of the examinee in relation to the questions asked during the test. The polygraph effectively allows the examiner to verify if the examinee is being truthful when they answer the question. A person cannot be truthful to the questions about the incident under investigation if they do not remember. Therefore, the examinee should only be asked questions to which they are certain they are telling the truth. Asking questions regarding occasions when the examinee was under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs can be problematic for polygraph testing. If the examinee suffered an alcohol or drug related blackout when they were intoxicated, this results in a gap in their memories. This is because being under the influence has interrupted memory consolidation and has resulted in a temporary block in the transfer of memories to the long-term storage part of their brain. Fundamentally the rapid increase in alcohol or drug levels has caused memory impairment or amnesia. An... --- ### Use of Polygraph in Criminal Investigations and Court - Published: 2021-12-16 - Modified: 2022-04-01 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/use-of-polygraph-in-criminal-investigations-and-court/ - Categories: News The polygraph is a superb investigative tool, it quickly rules out the innocent and allows resources to be more targeted in the course of an investigation. Whilst used for many purposes, its principle use worldwide is in criminal investigations. Therefore, it is not surprising that we are often approached by clients looking to use test results in court. Contrary to popular belief there is no reason why lie detector test evidence cannot be used in courts in Ireland; it is in fact no different to any other piece of evidence. We have lost count of how many times clients have told us that a Garda or solicitor have incorrectly informed them that test evidence is not used in courts in Ireland. Whilst the Garda does not use polygraph evidence in court there is no reason why a defendant cannot use such evidence as part of their defense. Ultimately it is down to the judge to decide whether to permit this evidence and if so, how much weight to place on it. In our experience, we find there is not usually a problem with test evidence being admitted in courts in Ireland but we find it is more compelling when is supports other evidence rather than when it is the only evidence a defendant relies on. However, it is also beneficial in situations when there is no collaborative evidence and it is simply one person’s word against another’s. Some critics claim the polygraph is not accurate enough to be used in... --- ### Lie Detector Misconceptions > What actually happens in a real test is nothing like you see on TV. A Lie Detector test usually takes around 2 hours – with no audience or scripted answers. - Published: 2021-10-08 - Modified: 2021-10-08 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/lie-detector-misconceptions/ - Categories: News Many people find the idea of a polygraph test fascinating and intriguing. However, real examinations are not televised events and often people have acquired many misconceptions about how the process works due to something they have seen on television. You may hear about the results of a test on daytime tv shows, but you do not actually see a real test being conducted. You may see a short clip of a lie detector test in a real-life crime program or you may have seen a fictional test in a film or a tv drama, but you have not seen real polygraph tests performed  by a qualified professional examiners, broadcast or posted on facebook. Usually in these fictional scenarios the process does not even remotely reflect what actually happens in a real examination. Television producers are concerned with audience viewing figures and producing dramatic and entertaining programmes rather than creating an authentic representation of a polygraph examination. For example, many of the test questions in these scenario’s would never be used in a real-life situation as they would not be considered good test questions. The questions asked are not random or casually chosen. They are not trick or surprise questions either. Additionally, in real life it, would be absurd for an examinee not to know in advance the type and scope of the questions that they are going to be asked. The examination process usually takes around two hours of which at least an hour of this is the pre-test preparation... --- ### Is it Possible For Someone Beat a Lie Detector Test? - Published: 2019-09-30 - Modified: 2024-12-19 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/can-you-beat-a-lie-detector-test/ - Categories: News The procedures and testing equipment are designed specifically to determine if someone is undergoing any type of countermeasures, or trying to beat the test. A properly trained and experienced examiner will observe or detect any such attempts at obstruction. It is not possible for someone to prevent the involuntary physiological responses that occur when someone is not telling the truth. Occasionally someone may think that by moving at certain points in the test it will help them pass, but both the examiner and the equipment will detect any such activity. Many people have heard of things such as putting a tack in their shoes and pressing down on it. Such actions simply do not work as they will be instantly detected. If someone is engaging in countermeasures during their lie detection testing, they will quickly be asked by the examiner to stop. If they continue, they will end up with a report at the end of the process that states the person was purposefully not co-operating. Innocent people do not engage in this type of behavior and conclusions of dishonesty will only be reinforced. Sometimes a person who is not being truthful may agree to take a test to give the impression to others they have nothing to hide in the hope that by simply agreeing to a test, they will not be pressed to follow through. Sometimes this strategy works for them, if the questioning party is ignorant of the inability to fake a test or how accurate a... --- ### What Procedures are Involved in Polygraph Testing? > What is it like? A test may last up to two and a half hours, with the actual time one is ‘hooked up' to the equipment only a small part of the entire process. Initially we conduct a thorough pre-test interview allows us to discuss the issues with the examinee and prepare them for the testing. This comprises an explanation of the equipment and how the test works, discussion of the issue and the questions that will be asked of them. Applicable Questions It is very important to define proper questions to which the examinee is certain they are being truthful on, to avoid anything unrelated to the issue interfering because of a poorly worded question. We then conduct a practice test unrelated to the real test. That gives a person a chance to get used to wearing the equipment, because it can feel a bit intrusive, at first. It also gives us chance to set the equipment up for that person. Getting Connected to the 'Machine' The polygraph is collecting physiological data created by the involuntary part of the central nervous system, to establish if there is a response, when the examinee is asked the relevant questions. These responses have been proven to be associated with deception. The majority of a test is the preparing the examinee for the test, setting the equipment up for them and ensuring they understand the scope and meaning of all the questions and are... --- ### Why Would Someone Need, or Want, a Polygraph Test? > To prove you're telling the truth when there's no physical or corroborating evidence a Lie Detector test may be your only chance of resolution and relief. - Published: 2018-11-26 - Modified: 2020-04-08 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/qa/why-would-someone-need-or-want-a-polygraph-test/ - Categories: Q & A When There is No Physical Proof to Exonerate You a Polygraph May Be Your Only Recourse Being asked to take a lie detector test, or requesting one yourself, is not usually a comfortable issue to have to deal with. We would like to examine some of the reasons why someone would want or need a test. Most of the people that request a test for themselves do so because they want or need to prove they haven't done something that they've been accused of doing. It is usually something that's has greatly affected their life or reputation in a very significant way. Sometimes it is something that has lingered for months or years, eating away at you. When there is no real way for someone to refute such accusations or there is no corroborative evidence available then it is very difficult or even impossible for someone to clear their name in any other way. People come forward when they need to prove that they're telling the truth and a polygraph test is the only way they reasonably can do so. Frequently someone is applying for a sensitive employment situation and the employer is in need of addition information other than what the candidate can directly provide. The assurances provided by polygraphs can seriously limit the possibility of future liabilities, preserving the safety of assets or intellectual knowledge and, in fact, the reputation of a business or brand name. Accuracy The American Polygraph Association, the body responsible for a majority of research in this area lists a single issue test at up to 98% percent accurate, based on the test being conducted by a qualified examiner who uses the latest computerised equipment and who uses validated techniques. In other words, it is very accurate. It is also important that the person taking the test follows the instructions given by the examiner as these instructions are designed to help the truthful person through the process. If you are not being truthful you will not pass the test. Lie Detector? A polygraph test does not 'detect the truth'. It monitors your reactions, both voluntary and involuntary and records them so a qualified examiner can determine if you reacted in a way consistent with someone telling the truth. A polygraph is only as accurate as the test and the examiner. That is why there is so much importance put on the person doing the test, the type of test, the environment, and the examiner's ability to observe and detect counter measures. Reliability Factors In summary, only the latest professional equipment, operated by an experienced and trained specialist, with APA certification and ongoing continuing education, can properly administer a test. Even then it is considered 95-98% accurate... not absolute. It is a guide, like asking a question, looking into someone's eyes, or observing how they react to certain things, but it is based on thousands of tests and studies,... --- ### What Type of Questions Are Included in a Polygraph Test? > How does the questioning work? Pre-test interviewing Comparison questioning Relevant questioning Many people wonder what kind of questions they will be asked in a polygraph examination. In every case the examiner will conduct a pre-test interview to obtain all the pertinent background information about the matter under investigation to ensure the questions asked on the test deal with the issue. Some issues can be complex others are relatively straightforward. Comparison questions are asked to determine reaction during honest and dis-honest responses and to calibrate to the subject and record the initial responses. All polygraph tests are comprised of a number of different types of questions, but there are usually up to three questions asked in relation to the actual reason the test is being conducted. These questions are referred to as the ‘relevant questions’. These questions, as well as being specific to the test issue must also meet the strict APA (American Polygraph Association) and BPA’s (British Polygraph Association) specified rules of polygraph testing. What is Relevant? Quite frequently people are concerned as to the types of questions asked. As an example, when attending a test requested by an employer, the employees may have concerns about what they will be asked or if their personal or private lives will be unduly delved into. However, the questions must be specific only to the actual reason for the test. The examiner will never allow the questions to deviate from the specific issue at hand, and ensure there is no attempt to... --- ### What Kind of Equipment is Used in a Polygraph Test? > Everything is computerised today. People just don’t know what to expect and are sometimes surprised that the polygraph instrument is quite small. Some people expect to see the old analogue machine, with all the dials and the needle moving across the page, as this is often what you may see on television. However, everything has moved on now and is computerised. The polygraph instrument is a small diagnostic tool and has a number of components that are attached to the examinee. Two corrugated tubes are gently attached to the upper and lower chest areas. These are used to measure the breathing of the subject. Next, there is a blood pressure cuff that connects to the arm. This is only inflated to a light pressure, unlike the pressure when blood pressure is being taken. We are not taking a blood pressure reading but collecting constant data to detect any changes that occur in the heart rate and the pulse rate during the test. There are then two finger cuffs attached to two fingers on one hand to measure skin conductivity, which relates to sweat gland activity. Then a further clip, a plethysmograph, a medical device most people will have seen on a hospital ward is attached to another finger, this measures blood rate volume. A motion sensor or movement mat is then used to detect any motion which may be made to try to influence the testing. All of this... --- ### Are you a victim of Gaslighting? - Published: 2018-08-15 - Modified: 2018-08-15 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/are-you-a-victim-of-gaslighting/ - Categories: News Do you suspect your partner is cheating? Does your partner deny this and claim you are crazy and imaging things. Does your partner continuously deny they said or did something (even though you have proof) to the extent it causes you to questions yourself? Does your partner tell others you are “crazy”? If so then you are probably a victim of a gaslighter. Ask your partner to take a polygraph test, an innocent person should have no problem clearing their name. What is gaslighting? Well there are various definitions, but essentially it is a form of psychological manipulation which seeks to a make the victim doubt their memory perception and sanity. It’s a malicious form of abuse and like all form of abuse it is based on the need for power and control. The term “gas light” originated from a 1938 stage play by Patrick Hamilton whereby an abusive husband tried to drive his wife crazy by dimming the lights (which were powered by gas) and then denied the lights had changed when his wife pointed it out. Gaslighting is often a gradual process in a relationship and results over time in a victim becoming confused, anxious and losing the ability to trust their own perceptions. This gives the abuser more control over the victim. Gaslighters often accuse their victims of something they themselves are doing- such as cheating. They will tell others the victim is crazy, so if the victim confides in others about the gaslighters behaviour, they will... --- ### Richard Satchwell and the Polygraph (Lie Detector test) > We are the only polygraph test company in Ireland with examiners living in Ireland and we are more than happy to conduct a test for Richard Satchwell. - Published: 2018-03-22 - Modified: 2018-07-09 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/richard-satchwell-and-the-polygraph-lie-detector-test/ - Categories: News We have been approached many times over the last few months by media outlets keen to arrange a polygraph test for Richard Satchwell. Despite this we cannot do anything that may jeopardise any future proceedings, so the approval of the investigating office is required before we can conduct a test. It is also important that anybody taking a test is a suitable candidate and any medical or mental health conditions are stable. We are currently yet to ascertain whether Richard is a suitable candidate. We of course, all hope that Tina is found safe and well soon. This week we were deemed to be the sixth most democratic country in the world and a bastion of pluralism and civil liberties by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual Democracy Index. That is the lie that went around the world this week and it’s not because the researchers failed in their task, it’s because the deception is so complete and runs so deep it is almost impossible to get to the truth. Insurance fraud occurs when people deceive an insurance company to collect money to which they are not entitled. All insurers are at risk of fraud. Despite a number of initiatives introduced in the last few years, to help tackle the problem, fraudulent insurance claims remain a huge problem for the insurance industry. A study was conducted by a member of the Lie Detector Ltd Ireland team involving collecting primary data directly from insurance policyholders through questionnaires to explore whether introducing the use of polygraph in the insurance claims would influence whether they made an exaggerated or false claim. The main findings from the study revealed that insurance policyholders are more likely to be tempted to commit fraud if they believed they will not be discovered. This concurs with existing research which suggests that one of the foremost reasons people commit insurance fraud is because they believe will not be found out. When the polygraph was introduced as part of the claims procedure the policyholders were less likely to commit fraud. Concluding that there is potential for the polygraph to be used as an effective deterrent to prevent or reduce the levels of insurance claims fraud. --- ### False accusations? A polygraph test can be a life changing event and choosing a polygraph examiner is a big decision; therefore you need to ensure the examiner is properly qualified and competent to conduct a test. Here are some guidelines to consider before making your decision: Ensure the examiner completed their training with an American Polygraph Association (APA) accredited school and that they are a current member of the APA. It is a requirement of the APA that practising examiners undertake regular on-going education. Check that the examiner has met the APA minimum requirements regarding continuing education. Furthermore it is beneficial to look for a polygraph examiner who has professional affiliations and memberships with recognised associations that set professional standards for its members, such as the British Polygraph Association- http://www. britishpolygraphassociation. org/members. html These associations will publish a list of current members on their websites. Currently there is no Irish Polygraph Association. Check the examiner is using the latest computerised equipment. Ensure the examiner works within an established business. Ask the examiner how long the process will take. A properly conducted polygraph examination will not take less time than dictated by APA standards. Is the examiner charging a market related rate? Be very suspicious of an examiner charging less than the market rate, it may mean they are using substandard equipment or may not be properly qualified. Do not accept Voice Stress Analysis (VSA) in place of a polygraph test. Published validity studies show VSA is not reliable and offers little or... --- ### Mistletoe & Lying - Published: 2016-11-11 - Modified: 2018-07-09 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/mistletoe-lying/ - Categories: News Hundreds of cheating husbands are being hauled in for lie detector tests in the run up to Christmas. Most of the clients are women who want to deal with a historical indiscretion or cheating issue. A polygraph test will determine if a partner has been telling her the whole truth. The Christmas period always triggers a big increase in test on relationships and I think this is because the innocent party wants to be either able to enjoy Christmas with their partner or end their relationship before Christmas Day”. They may be worried that the test will be intrusive or delve too deeply into personal issues. However, there must always be a genuine reason for a test before an examiner will agree to conduct polygraph testing in the workplace. Quite often this may relate to an economic loss, a theft or fraud for example, where there is an on-going specific investigation taking place. Sometimes there is an official criminal investigation, sometimes the business wishes to resolve the issue internally. Our experience of polygraph testing in a business environment has been very positive. Unfortunately, people can find themselves in a position whereby, through no fault of their own, they are under suspicion of a serious crime, and they are unable to prove their innocence. This can cause significant stress for the people under suspicion; it can cause an uncomfortable and stressful work environment and relations between employees and also with management can deteriorate. This results in a detrimental effect of the health and emotional well-being of employees and often results in increased level of absenteeism and sick leave. Being offered a polygraph test, we find is welcomed strongly by innocent employees. It gives them a chance to clear their name and to remove the grey cloud of doubt which would otherwise always be hanging over them. Following successful trials, mandatory polygraph testing for set to be introduced early next year in England and Wales as part of the post-conviction supervision of the most serious sex offenders. Polygraph testing is now identified by many as an important element in the fight to keep society safe from sexual assault. The costs to our communities of these crimes are phenomenal, we’re not just talking the financial costs, which are huge when you consider the medical, mental health, emergency services and police costs: more importantly the adverse impact of this type of crime on the victim is unquantifiable. Certain behaviours exhibited by sex offenders makes polygraph testing highly pertinent for this type of offender. This behaviour includes: Sex offenders are often characterised by a strong need for power and control. There is significant planning and preparation of their crimes to prevent being caught Sex offenders vehemently deny or minimise their wrongdoing and deny facts. They often exonerate themselves of culpability for their actions They frequently deny or minimise their wrongdoing both about the offense of conviction AND past behaviours Sex offenders deny the impact of the offence or harm caused to the victim   These ‘excuses’ implicitly give ‘permission’ for re-offending to reoccur. Sex- offenders do not take responsibility for their sexually abusive behaviour. Unfortunately, punishment alone does not prevent sex offenders from re-offending. The use of polygraph examinations have proven key in breaking this denial and ensuring the offender accepts responsibility. This leads to admission of behaviours of concern,... --- ### Lie Detector Test Ireland - Published: 2016-02-15 - Modified: 2020-04-24 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/lie-detector-test-ireland/ - Categories: News Lie Detector Limited provides polygraph (often referred to as Lie Detector) services in Ireland for both private individuals and corporate clients... The word polygraph literally means “many writings” The polygraph is a diagnostic tool which records respiration, cardiovascular activity and electro dermal activity, the instrument itself is a combination of several recording devices routinely used in the medical and scientific community Other names for the polygraph include ‘Psychophysiological detection of deception’ and ‘lie detector’. Whilst the polygraph is often termed a “lie detector”, this can be confusing as the polygraph instrument does not actually detect lies. The polygraph measures, through way a number of components attached to a subject, the physiological responses which occur when that subject is asked questions. This information (or tracing)s are recorded on charts which the examiner can interpret to make a determination as to whether or not the subject was being truthful when answering the questions. A polygraph test will take a minimum of 1. 5hours but may take up to three hours. The test comprises of three parts. The first part is the pre-test, the polygraph examiner will complete required paperwork and talk with the examinee about the test. During this period, the examiner will discuss the questions to be asked and familiarize the examinee with the testing procedure. The second part is the collection of charts , the examiner will administer and collect a number of polygraph charts. Following this, the examiner will analyse the charts and render an opinion as to the truthfulness of the person taking the test. Please see article below published in the Irish Examiner on Friday 25th January 2012. By Sean O'Riordan. A county councillor who voluntarily took a lie detector test has spoken of his “huge relief” after the High Court quashed his conviction for assault. Cllr Danny Crowley, aged 48, was so convinced of his innocence he presented the lie detector test to the High Court as part of his two-year legal battle to clear his name. The married father of three and his brother, Michael, aged 45, were convicted at Bantry District Court on Mar 26, 2011, of assaulting a man in a pub at Trafrask, near their home of Adrigole. The Fianna Fáil councillor said some comments posted on social media after the district court case; were very upsetting for me and my wife, but much more so for the younger members of the family. I was never in court in my life before. said the councillor, a peace commissioner and a member of the Co Cork joint policing committee. I decided that however long it was going to take me, I’d continue to seek justice and that’s what I did. The district court convicted him and his brother of assaulting the man and fined them €2,000 each. After the case, he travelled to Dun Laoghaire of his own accord where he underwent a polygraph test at the offices of Lie Detector Ltd. There he was asked four questions pertinent to the case, including if he had assaulted a named man... --- ### Lie Detectors Snare Party Cheats - Published: 2015-01-18 - Modified: 2018-07-09 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/lie-detectors-snare-party-cheats/ - Categories: News Girls who suspect their fellas have been cheating at the office Christmas party are demanding they take lie detector tests... We couldn’t do a full test as that would have taken hours, but this gave me a good idea of what examinees face when they take a proper test. As I settled on a movement mat, I was asked to give a list of seven countries where I may have been born. To make it more challenging (for the examiner), I decided to name countries where I had previously lived as I expected that announcing would cause some sort of physiological reaction. I was then wired up and told to focus on an area on the white wall facing me. Polygraph use is becoming more popular for business & personal reasons Exclusive by Adelina Campos Irish couples are forcing their wayward partners to take lie detector tests to prove they are not cheating. Lie Detector Ltd, the first company to offer polygraph tests in Ireland, has revealed that couples facing relationship problems make up at least half their business. The firm’s CEO Sian Devine said: We get a lot of couples coming in to resolve trust issues that they have had for years. In many cases, one person in the couple has had an affair which was uncovered and they’ve worked it out with their partner but there is still doubt there. Whoever is taking the test will say that it was their own fault and they want to prove they haven’t done anything else. But we also get other people who have almost been forced to come along because they feel that if they don’t take the test their partner will think they must be guilty. So they can be annoyed about having to answer very personal questions. A lot of them are embarrassed because they associate polygraphs with the Jeremy Kyle show. They would tell us ‘I’m not the type of person who would usually do this sort of thing'. We’ve also seem couples who have been together for say 30 years but they’ve never got past that one issue, that’s really sad. There’s normally a huge sense of relief when it’s over and they tell us that... --- ### Can Polygraph evidence be used in Court in Ireland? - Published: 2014-01-14 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/can-polygraph-evidence-be-used-in-court-in-ireland/ - Categories: News This is a question we are often asked and often there is a great deal of misinformation around the subject. Not surprising really, given that it is only in the last two years that polygraph examiners have been based in Ireland and still many people are not aware of this. There is a general view that polygraph evidence cannot be submitted or used in court in Ireland. This is not true. There is no reason what-so-ever why polygraph evidence cannot be submitted as evidence. However it will be the decision of the judge in each case to decide whether or not it can be admitted and how much weight should be placed on this evidence. In this respect polygraph evidence is no difference to any other piece of evidence. What you do need, if you are considering taking a polygraph test, which you want to be used in court, is a solicitor who is prepared to make the effort to put a strong case forward as to why the evidence should be admitted, if this is met by any resistance from the opposing legal team. For example, under European law you have a right to call witnesses in criminal law cases; your solicitor needs to use the relevant laws to ensure your polygraph evidence is admitted. We would also recommend that you make the judge aware as early as possible of your intention to admit the polygraph evidence, to avoid any last minute confusion. You will need to call the... --- ### Why would someone take a Polygraph test they know they cannot pass? - Published: 2013-09-10 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/why-would-someone-take-a-polygraph-test-they-know-they-cannot-pass/ - Categories: News Whilst the majority of our clients use our services to prove they are being truthful in a matter, there are some who take the test knowing they cannot possibly pass... Whilst the majority of our clients use our services to prove they are being truthful in a matter, there are some who take the test knowing they cannot possibly pass. We often have bookings cancelled, especially in cases of suspected ‘cheating’ in relationships. It seems that when the test has actually been booked the suspicious partner believes that because the suspected partner is prepared to go through with the test, this in itself is a strong sign of their innocence. Some guilty parties believe that by offering to do a test this may pacify their partner, they are prepared to take a chance on booking a test in the expectation that they will not actually be required to go through with it. Sometimes this pays off, for others it doesn’t; therein lies the dilemma. If they cancel the test this will be taken as a sign of guilt, but if they go through with the test they will fail. So should they confess now or take a chance on beating the polygraph? This is usually when we have a situation where counter-measures are employed by the examinee. Unfortunately for the examinee, there is a lot of mis-information out there relating to the polygraph and any experienced examiner will quickly pick up on the tactic being used. However others follow all the instructions given by the examiner (and simply hope for false negative result). The ensuing result is usually met with the protestation; But why would I take the test if... --- ### Will you marry me – after you’ve passed a polygraph? - Published: 2013-06-24 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/will-you-marry-me-after-youve-passed-a-polygraph/ - Categories: News We are finding that the number of engaged couples seeking polygraph tests prior to their wedding is increasing. In many cases previous infidelity is a feature. Whilst the relationship is back on track, some doubts still remain, the betrayed partner may accept their partner is no longer cheating but wants to ensure that the full extent of the unfaithfulness has been admitted and that there isn’t further details being with-held. When the guilty partner took some time to “confess” and only did so under prolonged duress or after their partner found evidence, doubts can still remain as to whether they are still holding back details and are now being entirely honest. Conversely, it can be hard to trust a cheat; the betrayed partner wants to ensure there have not been any further indiscretions before they commit to marriage. It can take time to rebuild trust and this is entirely understandable. Sometimes we come across situations where the betrayed partner believes and trusts that their partner has changed and is now faithful. In these circumstances, the polygraph is for the benefit of parents and family who remain hostile and suspicious towards the cheater and do not want to see their loved one suffer future heartbreak. There are also circumstances where there no suspicions of cheating but either one or both parties want to test the truthfulness of information provided to them by their partner, before they make a lifelong commitment. This may involve questions regarding promiscuity, number of previous sexual partners... --- ### Polygraph: Testing sex offenders in Ireland - Published: 2013-05-14 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/polygraph-testing-sex-offenders-in-ireland/ - Categories: News The polygraph has long been used in the rehabilitation of sex offenders in the US. A study The Value of Polygraph Testing in Sex Offender Management; Research report submitted to the National Institute of Justice* concluded that there were a number of benefits in relation to testing post-conviction sex offenders, including: Enhanced disclosure and knowledge of the offender The polygraph was useful in alerting agents to potential violations, behaviours, and areas of concern that might not have otherwise been revealed. A "forced a level of honesty" that would not otherwise be attainable. The polygraph led to better management and supervision of the offender, it also resulted in better and more appropriate treatment The polygraph provided information that allowed a quicker response to situations, and could lead to "stepped-up" supervision or additional restrictions, if necessary. The polygraph was seen as a useful tool to verify compliance with conditions of probation More than half the respondents noted that the polygraph helped to prevent new offenses. It could be helpful in detecting behaviours likely to precede a crime, so the system could intervene with treatment and/or otherwise protect possible victims. When a crime was committed, it could be detected earlier, perhaps to the benefit of additional victims. Nearer to home the U. K have recently concluded a three year trial which involved testing paedophiles and sex offenders to establish whether they are still posing a danger to the community. There is a strong possibility that these tests will become compulsory in the UK.... --- ### Give a Dog a Bad Name - Published: 2013-04-22 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/give-a-dog-a-bad-name/ - Categories: News Once a person loses his reputation, he is likely to be blamed for the misdeeds of others... “Give a dog a bad name and hang him” Once a person loses his reputation, he is likely to be blamed for the misdeeds of others Unfortunately the follies of youth can come back to haunt us in later life, when our earlier transgressions can result in being at the top of a suspect list when a wrongdoing occurs. You can hardly blame others – it’s not easy to lose a bad reputation and trust, once lost can be extremely difficult to regain. It is often easier for others to believe history has repeated itself than face the fact that perhaps someone else is to blame. We come across many domestic situations (often when a theft has occurred) where in the absence of any evidence the family member with a chequered past is the main or only suspect. We can’t change our past- but it is possible to clear your name by taking a polygraph test to prove you have not done what you are being accused of. Unfortunately these situations tend to deteriorate over time and can tear families apart, so for anyone in this situation I would urge you to take a polygraph test sooner rather than later. --- ### Stop corruption in Irish Politics NOW - Published: 2013-04-02 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/stop-corruption-in-irish-politics-now/ - Categories: News We have started a petition to demand that any TD accused or suspected of corruption should undergo a mandatory polygraph test. Polygraph test any TD accused or suspected of corruption   We have started a petition to demand that any TD accused or suspected of corruption should undergo a mandatory polygraph test. Why has so much money been wasted on tribunals, when a simple test can establish in a matter of hours whether or not a TD is being truthful or not? The polygraph is an extremely effective deterrent and by introducing the use in politics this will immediately, at zero cost reduce the current levels of corruption, simply by its introduction. When wrongdoing or corruption is suspected the polygraph will quickly and cost-effectively establish the truth. The people of Ireland have been let down badly by its leaders, corruption has been endemic and tolerated and this has to stop now. If you, like us are sick of corruption in Irish politics, please sign our petition and ask everyone you know to sign it as well. In fact if you truly want change it is your obligation to support this campaign to improve the future of this country. We want 100,000 signatures to present to the government with the message that we DEMAND change Go to the Petition site here --- ### Pre-employment Polygraph Testing - Published: 2013-02-19 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/pre-employment-polygraph-testing/ - Categories: News There has been quite a lot of media coverage recently into how Irish Employers are increasingly using polygraph examinations now, particularly as part of the recruitment process... There has been quite a lot of media coverage recently into how Irish Employers are increasingly using polygraph examinations now, particularly as part of the recruitment process. Understandably anyone who has recently submitted a job application could be concerned about these developments. However there are only certain industries that would generally use the polygraph as part of their recruitment process. This includes: Security firms, who need to ensure that either criminals or someone with criminal intent does not infiltrate their business with a view to arranging a robbery essentially putting other employers and their families as well as customers at risk. Pharmaceutical companies may use polygraph for a number of different reasons including; protecting their intelligence from industrial espionage and ensuring they do not recruit individuals who are trying to gain access to drugs to sell illegally. Chemical manufacturers may want to ensure individual are not trying to gain access to chemical or terrorism or other illegal purposes. Businesses involved in facilities which have a significant impact on the health or safety of a large population,( such as nuclear or electric power plants, water works or toxic waste disposal) need to ensure terrorists or extremists do not infiltrate the business with the intention of harming the public. No good examiner should inquire into any of the following areas during pre-employment or periodic employment examinations: religious beliefs or affiliations beliefs or opinions regarding racial matters political beliefs or affiliations beliefs, affiliations or lawful activities regarding unions or labour organisations sexual preferences... --- ### Who uses Polygraph Tests? - Published: 2013-01-09 - Modified: 2017-10-04 - URL: https://liedetector.ie/news/who-uses-polygraph-tests/ - Categories: News We are often asked this question by the general public! We are often asked this question by the general public! Often the enquirer is of the view that polygraphs are mainly undertaken by those unfortunate enough to be in a relationship whereby one party suspects their partner of being unfaithful. Whilst it is true that the polygraph can play an important role when trust or infidelity issues arise in relationships -once trust has been broken it can be difficult for the injured party to believe in their partner again, often concerns about any further undisclosed indiscretions can be a major obstacle and polygraph testing can assist in these circumstances. However, there are countless other scenarios whereby we carry out polygraph tests for members of the public. The vast majority of our clients undertake a polygraph test because they need to prove they are telling the truth. We regularly test clients who have been the subject of serious accusation(s). Quite often there is no corroborative evidence, simply someone makes an allegation and our client finds themselves in a position whereby it is very difficult to clear their name – until they take a polygraph test. It would be true to say that most of our clients would not historically envisaged they would ever need to take a polygraph test. Sometimes our clients have lived with the consequences of an untrue allegation for many years. This may have had a hugely detrimental effect on their physical and emotional wellbeing. Resulting in psychological and physical ailments and disorders. Having the power take back... --- ## Testimonials ## Gallery ## Events ## Team ## VC Section ## Campaigns ## All FAQs
